4-H Program

Exciting things happen through 4-H programs. Youth discover by doing. They achieve their unique potential and gain confidence that will help guide them as adults.

The 4-H program in Douglas County offers 20 different clubs. Volunteer leaders share their knowledge on subjects ranging from kayaking, shooting sports, cooking, videography, western heritage, and kite flying to the more traditional animal and livestock clubs. Current animal clubs include horses, dogs, reptiles, guinea pigs, rabbits, and guide-dog puppies.

No matter what project is chosen, 4-H teaches skills for life, such as communication, decision-making, responsibility, and goal setting. 4-H is the only youth program that ties public and private resources—federal, state, and local governments; land-grant colleges and universities and their Cooperative Extension System; schools; parents; youth; and community-based organizations—together for the single purpose of supporting the positive and successful development of youth in order to enhance the quality of life for all.

If you want to learn more about what 4-H has to offer, contact the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension in Douglas County at (775) 782-9960 or visit www.4h-usa.org. Whether you want to become a 4-H member or a 4-H volunteer leader, there is always a place for you!

Sheriff’s Open House
Sheriff Ron Pierini’s Open House is held every other year in conjunction with National Law Enforcement Week. The event honors the officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty throughout the United States. The Sheriff’s Open House begins with a presentation of colors and special recognition for those fallen officers.

The Open House event is designed to provide the residents of Douglas County the opportunity to learn and familiarize themselves with all the programs and services offered by the Sheriff’s Department. There are many equipment displays and demonstrations that help residents to better understand how Sheriff Deputies perform their duties and assignments. The Department's offices are open for inspection, and jail tours are also offered as part of the Open House.

East Fork Fire and Paramedic District’s New Addition

The apparatus is a 100-foot, mid-mount ladder/platform truck manufactured by the American La France Corporation. This fire truck was designed to enhance the emergency response capabilities to structure fires, especially the larger commercial properties throughout the District. The purchase price of the aerial ladder truck was $617,000.

Douglas County Restraint Education and Awareness Program
This program, comprised of members from the Sheriff’s Office, the East Fork Fire Protection District, and the Tahoe-Douglas Fire Department, was established to educate parents and groups about child-passenger safety. Funding and child safety-seat technician certification is provided by the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety and REMSA. The technicians participate in “checkpoint” inspections of child safety seats. The checkpoints are voluntary. There is no cost for the inspection, and there is no enforcement action taken.

The program has inspected more than 1,046 child passenger safety seats. Of the seats inspected, 231 were determined unsafe and removed from use; and 390 new seats have been issued

Live Scan Fingerprint Machine
The Tahoe General Services Office acquired a new fingerprinting machine called a Touch Print 3000 Live Scan. The machine significantly reduces staff time and enables the office to transmit the highest quality digital fingerprint images to the State Repository in Carson City. The office takes fingerprints for various reasons—gaming work cards, real estate licenses, childcare applications, nursing licenses, and job applications. During the 2003 calendar year 3,543 ink fingerprints were taken.

Prior to purchasing the Live Scan machine, fingerprints were taken manually by inkpad and then forwarded by mail to the State Repository. Results took several months to obtain. With the Live Scan machine, the turnaround time for obtaining results has been reduced from months to days. Soon the turnaround time will be merely hours. The Live Scan machine was purchased in January 2004 for $26,300
